Vintage Japanese Carved Wood Kagami Stand with Votive Mirror Disk, Mid Showa (1946-1965) | SKU: 26M-879

A hand-carved votive mirror stand bearing inscribed dedications -- a rare devotional artifact from mid-century Japan.

A kagami stand of this type is a traditional Japanese wooden mirror holder, designed to cradle a round mirror disk in an upright display position. This exceptional example features a sculptural stand carved into a sweeping, wing-like silhouette -- its surface covered in finely worked low-relief carving depicting lotus blossoms and swirling cloud motifs, both deeply symbolic in Japanese Buddhist and Shinto traditions. The lotus (hasu) represents purity and enlightenment, while the rolling cloud patterns evoke celestial realms. The round mirror disk, fitted in a metal rim, rests in the cradle of the stand and tilts slightly forward -- consistent with devotional mirror displays used at household shrines (kamidana) or temple settings, where the kagami symbolizes the divine and the act of self-reflection.

The reverse of the stand is densely inscribed with brushed characters recording what appear to be dedicatory and commissioning inscriptions -- including references to a mirror guild or mirror maker's association, a named patron, and a date -- lending this piece the character of a votive or commemorative object rather than a purely utilitarian vanity mirror. In a modern home, this striking vintage Japanese craft object works beautifully as a living room accent piece on a shelf or mantle, as an altar or meditation space focal point in a Japandi-style interior, or as a conversation piece in a study or home office. It would make a meaningful and unique gift for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and decorative arts, or for Japanophiles with an appreciation for wabi-sabi aesthetic and hand-carved woodwork.

A rare and deeply storied piece of vintage Japanese devotional craft -- where hand-carved artistry, Buddhist symbolism, and inscribed history meet in one singular object.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
