Vintage Japanese Lacquered Small Three-Drawer Chest (Ko-Tansu / Hikidashi), Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-070

A compact lacquered three-drawer chest with charming figural and motif inlays -- a practical little Showa-era organizer with warm decorative appeal.

This small Japanese drawer chest, or ko-tansu / hikidashi, is a compact tabletop storage piece designed for keeping small personal items neatly arranged. Dating to the Mid Showa period (1946-1965), it is finished in a deep red-brown lacquer with softly rounded front corners and simple metal pulls. Each drawer front carries a small applied decorative accent, including a kimono-clad figure on the lower drawer and additional small motif inlays on the upper drawers. The drawers open to plain natural wood interiors, underscoring its practical use as an everyday household organizer.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese chest works beautifully as a jewelry or accessories box, a desk organizer for stationery and small tools, or a decorative accent on a shelf, vanity, or bedside table. Its modest scale and three separate drawers make it especially useful for sorting smaller items while adding a touch of Showa-era character to the room.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
