Vintage Japanese Hardwood Storage Box (Hako) with Brass Oval Handles, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-774-1

A sturdy open-top hako in deep lacquered hardwood -- a quiet expression of Early Showa craftsmanship.

A hako is a traditional Japanese wooden storage box, used in homes, workshops, and offices to keep tools, documents, or household goods neatly contained. This handcrafted Japanese vintage box dates to the Early Showa period (1927-1945), a time when Japanese craftsmen blended practical function with careful joinery. Constructed from a boldly grained hardwood -- possibly keyaki (zelkova) -- and finished in a rich dark lacquer, the box is open-topped with a lipped rim that prevents contents from shifting. Dovetail-style corner joinery is visible at the edges, reflecting the skill of the maker. An oval brass escutcheon-style carry handle is set into each side, allowing easy portability -- a thoughtful detail that elevates this piece above ordinary workshop storage.

Today, this vintage Japanese storage box adapts beautifully to modern interiors. Set it on a home office desk to corral stationery, cables, or notebooks in Japandi style. In a living room, it makes a striking accent piece -- fill it with small succulents or air plants for a wabi-sabi aesthetic. It also works well in an entryway as a catch-all for keys, mail, and small everyday items. Its deep, warm lacquer tone pairs naturally with both natural wood and dark-toned minimalist decor. A unique housewarming gift for collectors of vintage Japanese craft or anyone drawn to honest, handmade objects with a history.

A beautifully preserved piece of vintage Japanese craft -- simple, sturdy, and full of quiet character for any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
