Japanese Wooden Hokkaido Ainu Bear Carving (25M-369-2)
This vintage wooden carving is a striking piece of Ainu folk art from the 63rd year of the Showa era (1988). Crafted by an Ainu artisan in Hokkaido, the stool features an expressive bear clutching a fish—an iconic subject in Ainu culture symbolizing strength, sustenance, and harmony with nature. The surface is hand-carved in deep relief with meticulous attention to texture, from the bear’s fur to the intricate scales of the fish.
While originally created as a decorative sculpture, its broad, lotus-patterned top allows for functional use as a low stool or plant stand. The back is finished with a carved, scaled trunk motif, and the base is inscribed with the year and place of origin.
