Vintage Japanese Isho-Dansu Wardrobe Chest, Mid Showa (1946-1965) | SKU: 26M-A095

A tall mid-century isho-dansu combining a double-door upper cabinet with interior shelving and drawers, over a bank of full-width pull-out drawers -- a masterwork of handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture.

An isho-dansu is a traditional Japanese wardrobe chest designed to store kimono and folded garments with great care. This substantial example, crafted in the early postwar period, exemplifies the clean, confident carpentry of Mid Showa-era Japanese furniture making. The cabinet is constructed from straight-grained hardwood -- consistent with kiri (paulownia) -- displaying warm honey tones and a fine linear grain that deepens beautifully with age. The upper section features a pair of double doors secured by a cast iron openwork lock plate of exceptional quality: its pierced scrollwork design and aged dark patina mark it as the work of a skilled hardware craftsman. Inside, the upper cabinet reveals multiple open shelves and a fitted interior section with several smaller pull-out drawers for accessories and keepsakes. The lower section of the chest provides additional wide, full-depth drawers, each fitted with recessed cast metal bail pulls in a traditional half-moon form. Construction throughout is solid and purposeful -- dovetailed joints, flush-fitted panels, and smooth-sliding drawer action that still functions precisely after decades of use.

In a modern home, this versatile vintage Japanese storage cabinet earns its place far beyond the bedroom. Use it as a statement bedroom armoire or linen cabinet, replacing flat-pack wardrobes with something that carries genuine character. The lower drawers offer generous bedroom decor storage for folded clothing, while the lockable upper cabinet suits a home office as a secure document or media cabinet. In an entryway, its tall silhouette and warm wood tones make it a commanding entryway furniture piece -- use the interior shelves for bags and accessories and the drawers for everyday essentials. Its wabi-sabi aesthetic and honest construction sit effortlessly within Japandi style interiors, mid-century modern rooms, or any space that values craftsmanship over mass production. A truly unique gift for collectors of vintage Japanese furniture or for anyone seeking a meaningful housewarming gift with a story.

A commanding piece of vintage Japanese furniture -- handcrafted with quiet precision and built to anchor any room with warmth, history, and lasting utility.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
