Antique Japanese Isho Dansu (Kimono Wardrobe Chest), Taisho era, 1912-1926 | SKU: 26M-A410

A commanding two-section tansu combining a double-door cabinet above with pull-out drawers below -- handcrafted Japanese antique furniture at its most functional and beautiful.

An ishoudansu is a traditional Japanese wardrobe chest used to store kimono and folded garments. This fine Taisho-era example is built in the classic two-section format: a large upper cabinet with double doors opening to reveal several adjustable interior shelves, set above a lower chest of multiple full-width drawers. The exterior wood -- a straight-grained hardwood with warm honey tones consistent with keyaki (zelkova) or a similarly dense Japanese hardwood -- is finished with a quiet, glowing patina that speaks to over a century of careful keeping. The door panels are framed with raised molding, and the entire carcass is reinforced with bold iron corner fittings and strap hardware in the traditional tansu style. The interior back panels display a dramatically figured wood grain that contrasts beautifully with the calmer exterior surfaces, a hallmark of the skilled Japanese cabinetmaker's eye for material. The doors are secured by a decorative cast-metal lock plate with original key -- a rare and satisfying survival in antique Japanese craft.

In a modern home, this ishoudansu functions beautifully as a statement wardrobe, a linen cabinet in a bedroom or hallway, or an impressive entryway console with concealed shelving. The spacious upper cabinet accommodates folded clothing, bedding, books, or display objects, while the generous lower drawers are ideal for everyday storage -- clothing, accessories, or home office supplies. The warm wood tones and bold iron hardware suit a Japandi style interior, a wabi-sabi aesthetic, or any space that values handcrafted authenticity alongside practical storage. Standing nearly full-height, it makes an equally striking living room accent piece or dining room cabinet. This is a genuinely rare piece of Japanese antique furniture and an exceptional housewarming gift for collectors or Japanophiles seeking a once-in-a-generation find.

A rare and imposing piece of Japanese antique furniture -- the ishoudansu brings over a century of quiet craftsmanship and enduring Taisho-era elegance to any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
