Antique Japanese Kasane Tansu (Stacking Clothing Chest), Taisho era, 1912-1926 | SKU: 26M-A003
A tall, stately Taisho-era clothing tansu with sliding panel top compartment, multiple graduated drawers, and original cast metal hardware -- a rare survivor of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture.
A tansu is a traditional Japanese freestanding storage chest, and this impressive example represents the finest domestic cabinetry of the Taisho period (1912-1926). Constructed from a straight-grained hardwood consistent with nara (Japanese oak), the piece rises to a commanding height and is organized into distinct tiers: a top section enclosed by sliding panels, a row of smaller drawers below, and a graduated series of deep full-width drawers descending to a substantial base. Each section was built as a stackable unit -- a hallmark of the classic kasane-tansu (stacking chest) format used to store folded kimono and household linens. The exterior surfaces display an even, warm honey tone with tight linear grain visible across every drawer face, while the drawer interiors show the honest, slightly rougher secondary wood typical of period Japanese craftsmanship. Cast metal bail pulls with decorative rosette escutcheons are fitted to every drawer, and ornamental iron corner straps secure the stacked sections on the sides -- all original hardware in fine working condition.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese tansu earns its place as a statement bedroom dresser, providing generous clothing and linen storage while introducing the wabi-sabi aesthetic that defines Japandi style interiors. The tall, narrow profile makes it equally suited as entryway furniture -- storing scarves, bags, and seasonal accessories in the deep lower drawers while the sliding-panel top compartment discreetly holds everyday essentials. The warm natural wood tone pairs beautifully with linen textiles and natural ceramics, making it a compelling focal point for a minimalist decor scheme. It also makes a distinctive gift for collectors or Japanophiles who appreciate antique Japanese antique furniture with genuine provenance and presence.
