Japanese Ikebana Vase | Gourd-Form Flower Vase & Living Room Accent, 1990-2018 (Heisei), SKU 26M-615
A sculptural hyotan-gata (double-gourd form) stoneware vase by a signed studio artist, presented in its original wooden tomobako storage box.
An ikebana vase is a vessel designed specifically for the Japanese art of flower arrangement, where the shape and character of the container are considered as integral to the composition as the blooms themselves. This striking example is formed in the hyotan-gata -- the classic double-gourd silhouette long associated with good fortune and refined taste in Japanese craft. Wheel-thrown from a coarse, iron-rich stoneware clay and fired unglazed, the surface exhibits the warm, toasted terra-cotta and deep umber tones characteristic of yakishime (high-fired, unglazed) pottery. Natural kiln flashing -- the subtle color gradation from russet red at the base to a smoky dark brown at the shoulder -- gives the piece an organic, almost geological presence that speaks directly to the wabi-sabi aesthetic. A faint impressed artist seal is visible on the foot, and the accompanying tomobako wooden box is brushed with the artist's inscription and red seal stamp, confirming this as a documented, signed studio work. The narrow, slightly flared mouth is hand-finished and intentionally rough at the rim, inviting a single stem or a spare, asymmetric ikebana arrangement.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese stoneware vase works beautifully as a living room accent on a low shelf or side table, holding a single dried branch, pampas grass stem, or seasonal flower in the ikebana tradition. Its compact, rounded form and earthy, unglazed surface make it an ideal Japandi style or wabi-sabi decor piece -- equally at home on a minimalist decor bookshelf, a meditation corner, or as a bedroom decor accent alongside natural linen and wood. The tomobako box adds display and collector value, making this a thoughtful gift for collectors of Japanese antique pottery, or a distinctive housewarming gift for anyone drawn to handmade ceramics and Japanese craft.
