This striking example is the work of Fukagawa Seiji, one of the most prestigious kilns operating out of Arita, Saga Prefecture -- a region renowned for producing Japan's finest porcelain since the early Edo period. The vase features a full-bodied ovoid form with a gently narrowed neck and a fine gold-trimmed rim, wheel-thrown and finished to a high gloss. The entire exterior is enveloped in a rich, jewel-like cobalt ground, over which the artist has applied a masterful misty underglaze decoration -- softly diffused maple-like leaves rendered in pale blue-white float against the deep ground, evoking a moonlit garden. Fine gold linework traces delicate pine-needle branches across the surface, punctuated by clusters of round berries in warm iron-red and burnished gold. The base carries a blue underglaze "Fukagawa Seiji" mark, and the accompanying kiri wood tomobako (presentation box) bears the artist's brush inscription and red seals, confirming authenticity. This is a fine example of vintage Japanese craft porcelain at its most refined.
