Japanese Hanakago Flower Basket | Vintage Ikebana Display & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-052-3
A finely hand-woven bamboo hanakago with a soaring arched handle -- a classic vessel of the Japanese ikebana tradition.
A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used in ikebana, the centuries-old art of floral arrangement. Crafted from split bamboo woven in an open lattice pattern, this hanakago exemplifies the refined handcraft vocabulary of the Late Showa period. The body rises from a flat-bottomed square base, flaring outward into a gently rounded open form -- a shape well suited to holding a kenzan (flower frog) and a loose, naturalistic arrangement of seasonal blooms. The rim is finished with a braided herringbone border that frames the basket's open mouth, while a tall arched handle -- composed of several bundled bamboo strips joined and wrapped at the crown -- lends the piece its elegant, sculptural silhouette. The warm honey-amber tone of the bamboo has deepened beautifully with age, giving the surface the subtle patina prized in vintage Japanese craft.
Today this hanakago is as versatile as it is beautiful. Lined with a small vessel or waterproof insert, it works as an ikebana or dried-flower display for a living room accent or entryway focal point. Its open weave and warm natural tones make it equally at home as a fruit or produce basket on a kitchen counter, or as a decorative accent piece in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi-inspired interior. It also makes a thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate the quiet beauty of handcrafted Japanese antiques.
