Japanese Shokudai Flower Stand | Bonsai Display Stand & Living Room Accent, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-690
A low-profile ikebana and bonsai display stand in richly lacquered hardwood, with hand-pierced floral apron and cabriole legs -- a refined example of mid-century Japanese craft.
A shokudai, or decorative display stand, is a traditional Japanese platform used to elevate and present prized objects -- most commonly bonsai trees, ikebana floral arrangements, or ceramic vessels -- in the tokonoma alcove or on a tatami floor. This handsome rectangular example dates to the Mid Showa period and is built from a boldly grained hardwood, possibly keyaki (zelkova), finished in a deep oxblood lacquer that deepens to near-black in shadow. The underside reveals the wood's rich natural figuring, with sweeping grain lines that speak to the quality of material chosen by the craftsman. The stepped, multi-profile frame adds architectural weight, while the hand-pierced apron running along all four sides is carved in a fluid, naturalistic motif -- likely stylized foliage or clouds -- a hallmark of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture from this period. Compact cabriole legs with outward-curling feet complete the silhouette, lending an elegant lift that is characteristic of the Sino-Japanese cabinetmaking tradition popular in postwar Japan.
Today this versatile stand works beautifully beyond the tokonoma. Its low, broad platform is perfectly proportioned for displaying a bonsai tree as a living room accent, elevating a ceramic vase or sculptural object on a sideboard, or anchoring a Japandi-style entryway vignette. The deep lacquer finish and refined carved apron make it equally compelling as a standalone decorative piece -- a warm, grounding presence in a minimalist or wabi-sabi-inspired interior. It also serves as a striking riser for a potted orchid, a tea ceremony set, or a collection of art objects on a shelf or console. A thoughtful and unique gift for collectors, bonsai enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese antiques.
