Japanese Sudare Bamboo Screen | Room Divider & Window Blind, 1990-2018 (Heisei), SKU 26M-548-2

A matched pair of finely woven bamboo sudare with gold brocade borders and decorative tassel pulls -- understated luxury in a natural material.

A sudare is a traditional Japanese split-bamboo screen or blind, woven from thinly shaved bamboo splints strung together with fine cotton or silk cord. Used for centuries in Japanese homes, temples, and teahouses, sudare were hung in doorways and across windows to filter light, encourage airflow, and create a soft visual boundary between spaces -- an elegant expression of the wabi-sabi aesthetic. This matched pair features densely woven, honey-golden bamboo panels that glow warmly in natural light. Each panel is framed with a gold-and-white brocade fabric border, patterned with a classic shippo (interlocking circle) motif, and finished with a coordinating brocade header at the top. Suspended from metal hooks, each screen is dressed with a handsome dark olive decorative tassel -- crafted in the style of a traditional kumihimo knot -- adding a refined, ceremonial quality to an otherwise understated piece of Japanese antique craft.

In a modern home, this pair of sudare screens is as versatile as it is beautiful. Hang them in a living room as a statement room divider or open-plan partition, bringing soft texture and warmth to Japandi-style or minimalist decor. Use them as window treatments in a bedroom or home office to filter light while preserving privacy -- a natural alternative to synthetic blinds. They also work beautifully as a decorative backdrop for a dining room, meditation space, or entryway, adding instant Japanese character to any interior. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese home decor.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
