Vintage Japanese Four-Panel Bamboo Folding Screen (Tsuitate), Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26M-961

A four-panel bamboo and wood folding screen with carved floral cutwork and hand-laced wave-pattern detailing -- a graceful example of vintage Japanese craft.

A Tsuitate is a traditional Japanese folding screen used to divide interior spaces, block drafts, and create a sense of privacy within a room. This four-panel example, dating to the Late Showa era, is constructed with a hardwood frame and filled with tightly bundled fine bamboo stalks secured by horizontal lath rails -- a style known as sudare-style paneling. Each panel features carved and pierced floral motifs at both the mid-rail and base rail, depicting trailing blossoms and leaves in a silhouette cutwork technique. Wavy cord lacing runs across the bamboo infill in a rippling pattern that evokes flowing water, adding a delicate decorative rhythm to the natural texture of the bamboo. The top rail of each panel is shaped into a gentle arch, and a natural bamboo pole is set into the upper register as an accent rail, lending rustic warmth to the overall composition. Black oval metal hinges connect the panels and allow the screen to be configured in a zigzag arrangement. This is a handcrafted Japanese folding screen in the wabi-sabi aesthetic, combining natural materials with restrained ornament in a manner that is distinctly mid-to-late Showa in character.

In a modern home, this Tsuitate folding screen is as versatile as it is beautiful. Use it as a living room accent to define a reading nook or lounge area, or stand it behind a sofa to add warm natural texture to a Japandi-style interior. In a bedroom, it makes an elegant headboard alternative or a dressing area divider that softens the space with organic materials. It also works beautifully in an entryway as a decorative privacy screen, or as a backdrop for a plant arrangement or meditation corner. The warm honey tones of the bamboo and hardwood frame complement both minimalist decor and earthy bohemian interiors, making it a unique housewarming gift or a standout piece for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture and vintage Japanese craft.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
