Japanese Chawan Pottery Vessel | Vintage Planter & Desk Organizer, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-022
A handcrafted Japanese ceramic cylinder glazed in layered oribe-style green, with rustic floral medallions and tactile horizontal ribbing.
A chawan-style ceramic vessel is a hallmark of the Japanese handcraft tradition, shaped by hand on the wheel and finished with expressive, artisan glazing. This piece is covered in a rich oribe-inspired green glaze -- one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic color traditions, originating in the Mino kilns of the Momoyama period and carried forward through generations of studio potters. The surface is textured with close horizontal wheel-throwing lines that catch the light beautifully, and several reserved cream-ground medallions are brushed with loose floral motifs in iron-brown pigment, a technique echoing the wabi-sabi aesthetic of intentional imperfection. The interior is left in an unglazed natural stoneware clay, consistent with the mingei (folk craft) tradition of the Late Showa period. Small notched feet at the base lift the vessel slightly, a refined finishing detail typical of handcrafted Japanese antique pottery.
In a modern home, this versatile ceramic vessel earns a place in almost any room. Stand it upright on a windowsill or shelf as a small indoor planter for succulents, air plants, or trailing vines -- its earthy green glaze blends beautifully with Japandi style and wabi-sabi-inspired living room or bedroom decor. Use it as a desk organizer for pens, brushes, or scissors in a home office, or display it as a standalone decorative accent on a dining table or entryway console. Its compact cylindrical form and striking handmade character also make it a unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates vintage Japanese craft.
