This is an antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu dated Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's). It was constructed of Cryptomeria (Suginoki) .The metal fittings were all hand made of iron.
Regular style of merchant chest was used to store business books and documents at store but this tansu is very unqiue in size and shape. Opening the roof shaped cover on top, it shows large compartment to store various things and 2 drawers in the front.
Every opening space has locks and it helped to secure its contents from wandering eyes and hands at the store, also because of the size and handles to carry it around, it should be transported a lot.
This antique Japanese tansu will make a great addition to any home decor.
