Antique Japanese Blue-and-White Porcelain Hibachi, 1910s | SKU: 24N-203-11
A large blue-and-white porcelain vessel of striking presence -- hand-painted with pendant cartouches, peony clusters, and medallion motifs in rich cobalt on a clean white ground.
A hibachi is a traditional Japanese charcoal brazier used for heating and, in larger ceramic forms, as a decorative household fixture placed in reception rooms and entryways. This substantial cylindrical vessel -- likely dating to the Taisho era (1910s) -- displays the bold, confident brushwork characteristic of late 19th-century Japanese antique ceramics. The exterior body is divided into alternating pointed shield-shaped cartouches, each filled with hand-painted peony blossoms and circular medallion motifs rendered in layered tones of deep cobalt and pale blue wash. Between the cartouches, pendant heart-and-knot motifs hang freely in the white ground, adding graceful movement to the composition. A continuous key-fret border rings the wide flat rim, completing the design with geometric precision. The unglazed flat base and heavily stained interior are consistent with long-term use, lending this piece the unmistakable authenticity of Japanese antique ceramics with genuine age and provenance.
Today, this commanding vessel translates effortlessly into modern interiors. Its generous 18-inch diameter and open mouth make it an ideal cache-pot or jardiniere -- simply set a potted fiddle-leaf fig, bonsai, or trailing vine inside for a dramatic living room accent or entryway statement piece. It works equally well as a floor-level decorative urn filled with dried botanicals, pampas grass, or tall branches, perfectly suited to Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interiors. Collectors and design enthusiasts alike will appreciate its scale and artistry; it would make a memorable housewarming gift or a centerpiece acquisition for anyone drawn to Japanese antique furniture and decorative arts.
