Antique Japanese Buddha Statue, Wood, 1920s (SKU 25D-077-1)

Finely carved gilt-wood Buddha seated on a lotus throne with openwork mandorla

This antique Japanese wooden Buddha statue presents a serenely modeled figure seated in lotus position upon a richly layered rengeza (lotus pedestal). The surface is finished in a dark lacquered tone with warm gilt highlights that softly illuminate the face, chest, hands and petals, evoking the glow of temple candlelight. Flowing robes, beaded necklaces and the calm, meditative expression are rendered with careful chiseling that reflects the skill of a traditional Buddhist sculptor.

Behind the figure rises an elaborate openwork kōhai (mandorla), carved with scrolling foliage and stylized lotus blossoms that frame the Buddha in a halo of intricate detail. The octagonal base suggests use as a principal image on a home altar or in a small temple setting, while the classic mudrā of the hands conveys both teaching and compassion. A characterful piece with gentle age to the gilding, it brings an authentic sense of Taishō-period devotional art to any interior or collection.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
