Antique Japanese Takarabune copper alloy sculpture, Taisho 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0386
A magnificent antique copper alloy takarabune -- the legendary Japanese treasure ship -- cast with extraordinary detail and bearing a century of rich patina.
A takarabune is a legendary vessel from Japanese folklore, said to sail into harbor on New Year's Eve carrying the Shichi Fukujin (Seven Lucky Gods) and a boundless cargo of auspicious treasures. Cast in copper alloy with a deep warm-brown patina and traces of green verdigris, this Taisho-era sculpture captures every iconic element of the tradition: a billowing ribbed sail engraved with a large auspicious character surrounded by swirling cloud motifs and finished with a dramatic serrated edge; a horizontal crossyard topped by a ball finial and flanked by bird-head terminals; and a detailed deck loaded with miniature textured cargo bales, rolled treasures, and symbolic implements -- all enclosed within a railed gunwale. The hull exterior is incised with a dynamic dragon-and-wave composition, and the entire vessel rides atop a sculpted wave-form base. Notably, the sail section is a separate cast piece that slots cleanly onto the hull, a hallmark of quality assembly construction typical of fine Meiji and Taisho period decorative bronzes. This is a rare and substantial example of Japanese antique metalwork at its most celebratory.
Today this striking sculpture makes an unforgettable focal point in a variety of modern settings. Display it on a living room console or mantelpiece as a statement piece of Japanese antique decor, where its dark patina and intricate engraving reward close inspection. Place it on a home office bookshelf or credenza as a symbol of good fortune -- a meaningful conversation piece and a unique gift for collectors or Japanophiles. Its commanding presence also suits an entryway table styled in a wabi-sabi aesthetic or Japandi-inspired interior, where the aged copper tones blend beautifully with natural wood and neutral linen. A piece rich in symbolism and craftsmanship, it brings the energy of abundance and good luck to any room it graces.
