Quietly eroded Sado stone Buddha with a softly worn “no-face” expression from rural Japan.
Hand-carved from a single block of pale, speckled stone, this modest no-face Buddha embodies the wabi-sabi spirit of countryside sekibutsu (stone images). The facial details have been intentionally left almost blank, inviting a meditative stillness and allowing the viewer’s own emotion to complete the expression.
Likely once enshrined along a village path or in a small garden altar, the figure sits in a simple seated pose, its robe and base only lightly indicated by chisel marks now softened by time. Subtle weathering, pinholes, and color variations in the stone give this Taishō-era piece a natural presence that suits both traditional and contemporary interiors.
A quietly powerful piece that brings the calm presence of an old Japanese stone Buddha into any space.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
