Antique Japanese Small Drawer (SKU 25D-197-2)

Taishō-era wooden kodansu with fan-shaped handholds and sliding storage

This compact antique Japanese small drawer chest, or kodansu, showcases the understated elegance of early 20th-century design. Crafted in warm-toned hardwood with a simple box form, it features a shallow open shelf above a pair of paneled doors, finished with braided tassel pulls that lend a soft decorative accent to the otherwise clean lines.

Below, a full-width drawer provides practical storage, while the sides are pierced with stylized fan-shaped handholds that reference traditional sensu fans and make the piece easy to lift and move. Ideal as a bedside cabinet, tea chest, or small tansu for organizing everyday objects, it brings authentic Taishō-period character to modern interiors without overwhelming the space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
