Antique Japanese Ko Tansu Small Chest With Multi Sized Hirute Pull Drawers (SKU 25D-G013)

Compact Taishō-era ko tansu with multi-sized drawers, original hirute pulls, and working locks.

This charming antique Japanese ko tansu (small chest) offers a beautifully balanced façade of multi-sized drawers, each fitted with classic iron hirute (leech-hand) pulls. Crafted in warm, honey-toned kiri (paulownia) wood with straight, clean lines, it captures the understated elegance of everyday storage furniture from early 20th-century Japan while remaining highly functional for modern interiors.

A vertical run of locking plates secures the right-hand drawers, complemented by a larger lock plate on the bottom center drawer, both retaining their original keys on red cords. The forged iron hardware has aged to a rich, dark patina that contrasts beautifully with the timber, making this ko tansu ideal as a tabletop chest for jewelry, tea utensils, writing tools, or as an accent piece in a tansu collection.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
