Antique Japanese Small Chest — 1920s, Taisho Era
A Subtle Masterpiece in Kirinoki, Crafted for Quiet Elegance
This beautifully proportioned antique Japanese small chest (ko-tansu) hails from the Taisho era (circa 1920s) and radiates a refined, timeless character. Crafted from kirinoki (paulownia wood)—a material prized in Japanese furniture-making for its light weight, smooth grain, and natural resistance to insects—this piece balances both function and grace.
The minimalist façade features two sliding doors at the top, accented with circular finger pulls, opening to a compact storage compartment ideal for stationery, tools, or treasures. Below are five drawers in varying sizes, each adorned with original iron hardware, including locks and a delicate key still tied with red string—a rare and poetic touch.
Its vertical form and modest footprint make it ideal for modern interiors, whether styled as a side chest, nightstand, or even a decorative organizer on a larger tansu. Its smooth surface and warm, golden tone showcase the natural elegance of aged kirinoki.
