Antique Japanese Small Chest — 1920s, Taisho Era (SKU G317)
A Gentle Presence of Graceful Proportion and Purpose
Delicate in size yet rich in character, this charming small chest from the Taisho era brings refined utility to the intimate spaces of traditional Japanese living. Originally crafted to sit quietly beside a tea ceremony set or rest by a futon in the washitsu, it served as a personal companion—holding cherished belongings, writing tools, or tea ware.
The simplicity of its kiri (paulownia) wood construction is softened by the gentle patina earned through time. Twin sliding doors with elegant purple tassels conceal a compact storage space, while two lower drawers provide further utility with iron ring pulls that speak to the understated strength of Japanese craftsmanship. Its open top shelf, framed with perfect symmetry, invites decorative display or daily ritual.
