Antique Japanese Haribako Sewing Box (SKU 25D-341-1)

Taishō-era haribako with sliding lid, multiple drawers, and original pin cushion platform.

This compact antique Japanese sewing box, or haribako, dates to the Taishō period and is crafted in a rich dark-stained wood with a beautifully figured grain. The front presents as a small tansu chest, with metal warabite-style pulls and round escutcheons that give it the quiet presence of a miniature merchant chest.

The hinged top opens to reveal a stepped interior with an open compartment for sewing tools and a raised platform that holds a removable pin cushion. Multiple drawers of varying depths slide smoothly, offering organized storage for thread, needles, and notions, or for use today as a charming desktop organizer or jewelry chest. The overall form and hardware are typical of 1920s Taishō-era domestic design, balancing utility with understated elegance.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
