Architectural kaidan-dansu with rich lacquered finish, kata-biraki doors and multi-sized kakute-pull drawers for versatile storage and display.
This antique Japanese step tansu, or kaidan-dansu, is crafted in a striking asymmetrical stair form that once served both as storage and as access between floors in a traditional machiya townhouse. The carcass is built in solid softwood with a deep, warm lacquered finish, the darker door and drawer panels framed by lighter reddish-brown edges that emphasize its architectural silhouette.
The chest combines sliding kata-biraki doors on the main case with a series of multi-sized drawers fitted with classic iron kakute-style pulls. Behind the doors are open shelves for larger objects, while the graduated side drawers offer practical organization for textiles, documents, or tableware. Honest wear, small nicks, and a softly burnished patina speak to decades of careful use, making this an evocative focal piece for an entry, living room, or along a staircase wall.
A fine example of Japanese kaidan-dansu, this piece brings authentic period character and highly functional storage to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
