Antique Japanese Ko Tansu Small Chest With Hikido Sliding Door And A Warabite Kanagu Hardware Drawer, Taisho Era (SKU 25D-G407)

An understated Taisho-era ko tansu with hikido sliding doors and classic warabite kanagu drawer pull

This compact antique Japanese ko tansu embodies the quiet refinement of everyday storage furniture from the Taisho period. The front is composed of vertical plank hikido sliding doors framed in a darkened border, their warm sugi (cedar) grain softly glowing against the deep brown lacquered case. Beneath, a full-width drawer anchors the design, finished with a graceful iron warabite kanagu handle that adds a subtle sculptural accent.

Behind the sliding doors, a cleverly arranged interior reveals multiple small drawers and shelves for organizing documents, writing tools, or treasured objects, while the large lower drawer offers generous hidden storage. Built with traditional joinery and a low, stable stance, this ko tansu works beautifully as an entry chest, sideboard, or display stand, bringing authentic Japanese character and practical functionality to modern interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
