This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from middle Meiji period (1880's-1890's). It was made from 100% Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood.
Originally used to store ephemera, documents, and stationery, its present day function works well as a bedside stand, side table, or small desktop chest for additional storage needs.
