This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu from middle Meiji period (1880's1890's).
Originally used to store textiles, small items and various bric-a-brac. It is made of Paulownia (Kirinoki) and other woods.
In today's home, it would work well as a storage unit as well as a side table or stand.
