This is an antique Japanese personal storage chest called Ko Tansu date Middle Meiji period (1880's - 1890's).  It was used to store letters, documents, books and other items for daily use. Made of Paulownia wood (Kirinoki).

The iron fittings were all hand made and the handles are Hirute style.The back of handle has the designs of Japanese pine and plum. The lockplates are decorated with one of the most auspicious designs which are crane, turtle and plum.

Contemporary uses for this piece include placement on a desk for additional office storage or using this as an elegant side table.
