Antique Japanese Ikebana Hanakago Double Bamboo Basket with Asymmetric Gnarled Root Frame, Taisho Era 1912-1926

A rare double-basket ikebana hanakago woven in split bamboo and mounted on a sculptural natural root frame -- a handcrafted Japanese antique of extraordinary character.

A hanakago is a traditional Japanese flower basket used to display ikebana arrangements, often placed in the tokonoma alcove as a focal point of seasonal decoration. This exceptional example features two globular woven basket forms of differing sizes -- one low and broad, one elevated and tapered -- each individually hand-woven from split bamboo strips in a loose, expressive open weave. The baskets are cradled and unified by an asymmetric natural root or branch framework that rises dramatically upward, its gnarled contours left largely unaltered to preserve the raw energy of the material. A long upswept branch element arcs above the upper basket, lending the whole composition a sense of movement and spontaneous growth that is central to the wabi-sabi aesthetic. Accent strips of lighter natural bamboo break through the deep, near-black patina at intervals, adding warmth and visual tension to the surface. The rich dark finish -- built up over more than a century of careful handling -- speaks to the quality of the original lacquering and the age of the piece.

Today this striking antique Japanese craft object works beautifully as a sculptural living room accent or entryway statement piece, displayed on a low console or sideboard where its organic silhouette can be fully appreciated. It suits Japandi style interiors, minimalist decor, and any space that values natural materials and artisanal character. Each basket form is open-mouthed and can hold a small liner for fresh or dried botanicals, making it a distinctive and conversation-starting floral display in a modern home. It also makes a memorable gift for collectors of Japanese antique folk craft, or as a unique housewarming gift for those who appreciate handcrafted objects with genuine history.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
