Antique Japanese Kutani Ware Okimono Figure of a Robed Drummer, Taisho 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0183

A compact Kutani ware okimono with rich yellow glaze, an expressive face, and a hand drum held at the shoulder.

This antique Japanese ceramic okimono depicts a robed seated figure wrapped in a hooded yellow garment and holding a small hand drum beside the face. The modeling is lively and sculptural, with deep folds in the robe, a darkly glazed face and hands, and contrasting green and brown glaze accents on the drum. The glossy surface and warm palette give the piece a strong decorative presence, while the intimate scale makes it especially appealing for close display on a shelf, desk, or in a small cabinet of curiosities. The underside shows an unglazed base with a vent hole, an impressed mark, and a red painted mark.

This small antique figure works beautifully as a bookshelf accent, a conversation piece in a study, or a thoughtful gift for collectors of Japanese ceramics and okimono. Its saturated yellow robe and expressive features pair especially well with wood furniture, ceramic groupings, and layered interiors that mix folk character with refined display. At just 5 inches high, it is easy to place while still offering strong visual character.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
