Antique Japanese Bronse Kagami Hand Mirror (SKU 25D-371-2)

Meiji-period hand mirror with crest and crane design in finely cast bronze

This elegant antique Japanese bronze mirror (kagami) features a circular plate with a straight handle wrapped in closely ribbed bamboo or wood, creating a warm contrast to the dark metal. One side retains its gently time-softened reflective surface, bearing the subtle marks and toning expected of an 1890s Meiji-era piece, ideal for display rather than daily use.

The reverse is richly decorated in relief with scrolling cloud motifs surrounding a bold mon (family crest) of stylised paulownia leaves, a design historically associated with high-ranking households. Additional scenes of cranes among foliage and flowing script, together with an inscription cartouche, showcase the refined metalwork and auspicious symbolism that make this Japanese bronze mirror a distinctive accent for a tokonoma, vanity display, or curated collection of Meiji-period objects.

An atmospheric Meiji-era kagami that brings the quiet elegance of traditional Japanese craftsmanship to any interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
