Vintage Japanese Ebisu Ornament, Wood, Seven Lucky Gods (SKU 25D-257-9)

Showa-era carved Ebisu deity holding a sea bream, symbol of prosperity and good fortune

This solid wooden okimono depicts Ebisu, one of Japan’s beloved Shichifukujin (Seven Lucky Gods), smiling broadly as he cradles a plump tai (sea bream) and fishing rod. Bold chisel marks, a warm honey-brown patina and the flowing wave-form base evoke the rustic charm of mid–Showa folk carving, making this a characterful piece for a tokonoma alcove, genkan or curated shelf display.

Carved from a single block of wood, the figure’s rounded cheeks, layered robes and stylised scales of the fish are rendered with confident, faceted cuts that catch the light beautifully. The swirling wave pedestal and Ebisu’s joyful expression embody wishes for thriving business and an abundant “catch,” making this vintage Japanese wooden ornament both an artful sculpture and an auspicious gift.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
