Vintage Japanese Ornament, Wood (SKU 25D-252-2)

Showa-era hand-carved koi carp ornament with rich dark lacquer tones

This charming vintage Japanese wooden ornament is carved in the form of a plump koi carp, a classic symbol of perseverance and good fortune in Japan. The body is deeply worked with overlapping scales, while the open mouth and raised tail give the piece a lively, almost humorous character that feels very much of the late Showa period.

Finished in a dark, reddish-brown stain that highlights the grain of the wood, the figure has a warm patina from age and handling. A circular opening on the back and a side aperture with metal ring suggest it once served as a small decorative vessel or hanging ornament, making it a versatile accent for a tokonoma alcove, shelf display, or vintage Japanese interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
