Vintage Japanese Fish, Wood (SKU 25D-271)

Hand-carved wooden koi sculpture with rich dark patina and bold, lifelike presence.

This substantial vintage Japanese wooden fish is carved in the round as a powerful koi, its body arched as if swimming upstream. Each overlapping scale is individually chiseled, catching the light across the deep brown finish, while the high-gloss surface hints at years of careful handling and quiet appreciation.

Symbolizing perseverance, good fortune, and success in Japanese culture, the koi (carp) is a beloved motif in traditional homes and temples. Displayed on a tokonoma alcove, sideboard, or shop counter, this expressive sculpture brings a sense of movement and auspicious energy, making it an ideal accent for both wabi-sabi and more polished interiors.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Heisei period (late 20th century)
  • Material: Solid carved wood with stained and polished finish
  • Use: Decorative sculpture / display piece for shelf, tokonoma, or countertop
  • Features: Detailed hand-carved scales and fins, expressive face with open mouth, dark vintage patina, elongated koi form resting on small integral feet
  • Dimensions: 7"W x 36"D x 10"H
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minor surface wear and small marks consistent with age and use

A characterful vintage koi carving that brings a quietly powerful Japanese accent to any curated space.
