Japanese Iron Lantern – Hexagonal Form with Monkey Handle (六角吊灯籠)

This beautifully cast Japanese iron lantern (tōrō) features an elegant hexagonal (六角) structure inspired by traditional temple and garden architecture. Each panel is adorned with openwork geometric patterns, allowing the gentle glow of light to radiate softly through. One side includes a hinged door, designed for placing a candle or oil light inside—an authentic detail that reflects its functional origins.

The roof is gracefully curved, with subtle eaves that echo the pagoda form, giving the lantern a refined, architectural presence. Perhaps its most charming detail is the iron handle adorned with a small hanging monkey, a playful and auspicious motif in Japanese culture symbolizing protection and good fortune.

Crafted in solid cast iron with a natural patina from age, this lantern embodies the quiet wabi-sabi beauty found in traditional Japanese craftsmanship. Perfect as a tea garden ornament, interior accent, or soft ambient light fixture, it brings with it the spirit of old Japan.
