Vintage Japanese Mizusashi Water Pot (SKU 25D-180-5)
Heisei-era mizusashi with hand-painted floral and bird medallions and original signed tomobako
This vintage Japanese water pot, or mizusashi, dates to the Heisei period and combines warm, iron-rich clay with bold slip decoration. The rounded body is coated in a deep chestnut brown glaze, its surface alive with subtle firing variations and horizontal throwing rings that reveal the potter’s hand. On opposing sides, creamy white reserves frame expressive brushwork: a stylised blossom on one face and a bird motif on the other, evoking rustic folk-ware traditions while remaining refined enough for the tearoom.
A sleek black lacquered lid with ring handle provides a striking contrast to the earthy body, making this piece both practical for tea ceremony use and visually strong as a display vessel. The interior is glazed a clean, pale tone for holding fresh water, and the base shows the exposed foot and kiln marks typical of hand-thrown Heisei ceramics. Housed in its original signed wooden tomobako, this mizusashi is an excellent choice for collectors of Japanese tea ceremony wares and mid-20th-century studio pottery.
