Vintage Japanese Water Basin Suiban, 1950s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-279)

Cast-bronze Japanese suiban with auspicious dragon and treasure motifs

This vintage Japanese suiban (水盤) is cast in heavy bronze with a softly waisted, double-lobed form raised on four bracket feet. The exterior walls are worked in fine seigaiha-style wave pattern, over which stand proud reliefs of auspicious emblems, creating a richly textured basin that speaks to mid-Showa metal craftsmanship.

Around the sides, stylised phoenix-like birds, parasols, scrolls, and scholar’s objects appear in high relief, while the underside reveals an impressive dragon in swirling clouds encircled within a medallion—an unseen detail that rewards close inspection. Originally intended as a water basin for ikebana or bonsai display, it now makes a characterful centerpiece, low planter, or contemplative mizubachi accent in a Japanese-inspired interior or garden.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
