Vintage Kutani Ware Vase by 二代徳田八十吉 (Yasokichi Tokuda II) (SKU 25D-179-1)

Showa Period Kutani masterpiece with luminous blue-green glaze and original signed tomobako

This exceptional vintage Kutani ware vase was created by 二代徳田八十吉 (Yasokichi Tokuda II), one of the most respected Kutani ceramic artists of the 20th century. Active during the Showa era, Tokuda II played a significant role in refining and elevating Kutani’s expressive glazing techniques, bridging tradition and modern studio artistry.

The vase presents a graceful baluster form with a softly rounded shoulder and gently everted neck. Its surface is enveloped in a flowing blue-green glaze — deep teal tones cascade and pool organically, revealing subtle iron-brown undertones beneath. The movement of the glaze evokes drifting clouds or distant ocean waves, an aesthetic deeply rooted in Japanese sensitivity to nature and atmosphere.

The interior is fully glazed, allowing the piece to function beautifully as a hanaire (flower vase), while maintaining its integrity as a collector’s work of art.

Accompanying the vase is its original wooden tomobako storage box, inscribed in brushed calligraphy and bearing the artist’s seal. The presence of the signed tomobako affirms its authenticity and workshop origin, enhancing both its historical significance and collectible value.

A refined example of mid-Showa Kutani artistry — elegant, atmospheric, and unmistakably Tokuda.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
