Vintage Japanese Vase, 1970s, Showa Era (SKU 25D-332-2-8)

Showa-era stoneware flower vase with natural ash-glaze and carved grass motif

This vintage Japanese flower vase (kabin) showcases the quiet beauty of Showa-era studio pottery. The gently swollen form is finished in a soft olive ash-glaze that pools and drips toward the shoulder, contrasting with the warm, unglazed clay body that fires to gradations of orange and charcoal at the base. Incised lines suggest slender grasses or reeds swaying in the wind, a classic Japanese motif that harmonizes with both traditional and contemporary interiors.

The textured surface, subtle kiln effects, and earthy tones evoke the spirit of rustic mingei craft while remaining refined enough for formal ikebana display. Presented with its original signed wooden tomobako storage box, this 1970s Showa-era vase is ideal as a focal point on an alcove shelf, tokonoma, or modern sideboard, whether used with seasonal branches or appreciated simply as a sculptural object.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
