Vintage Japanese Tiered Food Box (SKU 25D-480)

Showa-era black lacquer jubako with striking vermilion interior and modernist ringed design.

This vintage Japanese tiered food box, or jubako, showcases a sleek Showa-era sensibility, pairing a deep black exterior with a vivid vermilion interior. The cylindrical form is encircled with precise horizontal ridges that continue across the lid in concentric rings, giving the piece a refined, almost modernist rhythm while remaining rooted in traditional lacquerware craft.

Comprising multiple stackable trays and a fitted lid, this tiered food box was originally used for serving celebratory dishes at New Year and special gatherings. Today it works equally well as an elegant bento-style server, a centerpiece for hors d’oeuvres, or a sculptural storage piece. Its glossy urushi-style finish and bold red-and-black contrast make it a versatile accent for both contemporary and classic interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
