Showa-era lacquered jubako with bold gold fan motifs and vermilion interior
This vintage Japanese tiered food box, or jubako, showcases the refined lacquer artistry of mid-20th-century Japan. Deep black lacquer is richly decorated with overlapping sensu (folding fans) in shimmering gold, each fan filled with seasonal motifs such as plum blossoms, foliage and stylised landscapes that wrap seamlessly around the stacked tiers.
Inside, each tier is finished in a warm vermilion lacquer, creating a striking contrast when opened for serving. Traditionally used for celebratory dishes at New Year and special gatherings, this elegant box now serves equally well as a functional server for modern entertaining or as a sculptural accent piece that brings an authentic touch of Showa-era design to any interior.
