Vintage Japanese Jubako Tiered Food Box, Taisho Era (SKU 25D-275)

Taisho-era vermilion jubako set with auspicious gold maki-e motifs and original wooden storage case.

This vintage Japanese tiered food box, or jubako, is finished in a warm vermilion lacquer and decorated with charming gold designs of auspicious motifs, including arrows, fans, toy drums and a stylised mountain. Each of the five stacking layers is individually lidded, creating an elegant column when assembled and a versatile set of serving dishes when separated.

Likely made in the Taisho period, this piece would have been used for New Year’s osechi ryori or for special family gatherings. It comes complete with its fitted wooden storage case, hand-brushed with a family crest and calligraphy, adding both protection and provenance. Subtle age lines at some joins attest to its vintage character while the lacquer retains a handsome, glossy sheen.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
