Vintage Japanese Tanuki Statue, 1990s, Heisei Era (SKU 25D-323-1)

Cheerful Shigaraki-style tanuki for good fortune and welcoming hospitality

This vintage ceramic tanuki statue captures the playful spirit of Japan’s beloved folklore raccoon-dog, a traditional symbol of luck, prosperity, and protection for homes and shops. With its rounded belly, wide, glassy eyes, and straw kasa hat, the figure embodies the classic “Shigaraki tanuki” style often placed at entrances to invite customers and good fortune.

The tanuki holds a sake flask and account ledger, referencing both enjoyment and diligent business, while bold hand-brushed kanji decorate the side tablet. Richly textured fur, warm brown and cream glazes, and subtle touches of green on the rope and flask give this piece depth and character, making it a charming focal point in a genkan, garden, or interior display.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
