Vintage Japanese Tanuki (SKU 25D-096)

Charming Heisei-era ceramic pair of tanuki under a shared kasa hat

This vintage Japanese tanuki figure captures a jovial male and female raccoon dog standing shoulder to shoulder beneath an oversized kasa (bamboo hat). Hand-moulded in stoneware with a rich iron-brown body and warm cream slip for the bellies, it reflects the playful folk imagery long associated with Shigaraki-style tanuki ornaments that welcome prosperity and good fortune.

The pair lean together in an affectionate pose, one holding a sake flask while the other’s rounded form and red obi bow add a humorous, slightly risqué touch typical of Showa and early Heisei design. With its textured fur, expressive faces and softly weathered glaze, this compact okimono makes a characterful accent for a genkan entrance, tokonoma alcove, or eclectic Japanese-inspired display.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
