Showa-era circular stone panel finely engraved with a roaring tiger amid bamboo, on an elegant carved wooden stand.
This striking vintage Japanese stone carving presents a powerful tiger (tora) poised on a rocky outcrop, its stripes rendered in meticulous incised lines against the natural grey veining of the stone. The animal’s open jaws, arched back and coiled tail capture a moment of alert intensity, a classic motif of courage and protection in East Asian art. To the right, a vertical inscription in kanji adds a calligraphic balance to the composition, enhancing its presence as an art object rather than a simple ornament.
The round stone plaque is displayed on a custom hardwood stand carved in the form of stylised bamboo, a traditional symbol of resilience and upright character. The warm brown and black tones of the base contrast beautifully with the cool, stormy greys of the stone, making this piece an ideal focal point for a tokonoma alcove, study or entryway. Both sides of the stone are smoothly finished, with the reverse left plain to showcase the natural patterning of the material.
A refined yet dramatic Showa-era stone carving that brings the protective spirit of the tiger into any Japanese-inspired interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
