Vintage Japanese Small Drawer, Hakone Box, Showa Era (SKU 25D-114)

Showa-era yosegi zaiku chest with richly patterned marquetry fronts

This compact wooden chest showcases classic Hakone-style yosegi zaiku, the traditional Japanese marquetry technique in which contrasting woods are painstakingly combined into intricate geometric patterns. Diagonal bands of asanoha (hemp leaf), checkerboard, and other repeating motifs flow across the drawer fronts, creating a dynamic yet harmonious façade that changes character as the light moves over the surface.

Designed for storing small valuables, documents, or accessories, the piece offers multiple slim drawers with simple wooden pulls and a quietly elevated plinth base. The sides and top continue the geometric inlay, giving the cabinet a finished presence from every angle. Areas of minor veneer loss and age wear add an authentic patina that speaks to its life in a mid-20th-century Japanese home.
