Showa-era vanity tansu with hidden mirror stand and warm reddish-brown patina

This compact Japanese chest is a charming example of a kyodai tansu – a small dresser designed for dressing and grooming. Beneath its simple rectangular form and deep lacquer-like finish, a sliding top panel reveals a fitted compartment that stores a folding wooden stand, originally used to support a bronze or glass mirror. The front is organized with four drawers of varying sizes, ideal for storing cosmetics, accessories, or writing tools.

Side carry-holes, gently arched metal pulls with decorative backplates, and the rich, time-softened sheen speak to mid-20th-century Showa craftsmanship. Whether used as a bedside cabinet, desk organizer, or displayed as a vintage Japanese small drawer chest, this versatile piece brings authentic tansu character and practical storage to any interior.
