Vintage Japanese Small Box, Wood (SKU 25D-709-7)

Showa-era lacquered ko-bako chest with bold carved floral motif

This tall vintage Japanese small box is crafted as a multi-drawer ko-bako chest, ideal for storing letters, accessories, or calligraphy tools. The front is richly finished in deep black and red lacquer, carved in relief with a dramatic flowering plant that flows across the stacked drawer fronts, unifying the piece into a single artwork.

A repeating hammered or tortoiseshell-style ground pattern catches the light, while slim black pulls keep the silhouette clean and vertical. The sides and base are kept plain to emphasize the intricate front, making this Showa-period tansu-style box a striking accent for a desk, tokonoma alcove, or entry console.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
