Vintage Japanese Komainu Shishi Lion (SKU 25D-170)

Hand-carved stone shishi lion guardian poised protectively over a sacred ball

This compact vintage shishi (komainu) sculpture captures the playful yet protective spirit of the lion-dog so beloved in Japanese temple and shrine architecture. Carved from a single block of weathered stone, the guardian stands alert with one paw resting firmly on a tama, or jewel-ball, a classic motif symbolizing protection of treasure, wisdom, and the household.

Softly rounded features, stylized curls, and a high, flaring tail give this Showa-era piece a charming, almost folk-art character, while the rough-hewn surface and tool marks speak to its hand-made origin. Ideal as a subtle tsuboniwa (courtyard garden) accent or as a single komainu displayed indoors, it brings an authentic touch of Japanese stone sculpture and guardian-lion symbolism to any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
